Have I Found The Best Drape Company In Auckland?
May 26No you haven’t, but you may have found this Website as the result of a radio spot on Auckland’s NewstalkZB that asks you to Google the phrase “The Best Drape Company in Auckland”.
Now, I’ve covered this before with the example of KiwiBank’s TV campaign that had a similar call to action (no, not to Google drapes, but something along the lines of 100% Interest). The whole campaign in my mind was a complete ass, and if I recall correctly, one of those Aussie banks bought some AdSense AdWords spots for the phrase. Which basically meant they would appear first and/or on the right of Google’s search results for that particular keyword phrase.
Now, in both the above examples, the radio and or TV advertising is a complete waste of money unless you know that when someone is actually inclined to search for that phrase, you will rank number 1. Unfortunatley, there are the other 30-40% of searchers who will click on the 2nd or lower results, in which case you’ve spent money sending those potential drapery customers to your competitors.
The phrase isn’t at all hard to rank for. You could buy the domain www.bestdrapecompanyinauckland.co.nz, but it’s a bit spammy and Google is starting to take a long, hard look at exact match domains. I.e. if you resgister a name for your business or trademark that’s probably going to be OK, but building a Website that specifically targets a keyord or keywords that people are searching for, such as the really cheap custom thermal drapes you probabaly won’t be able to rank for it as easily as you once could.
Having said that, it should be fairly easy for this Auckland drape business to rank number one on Google. Bearing in mind that Google has hundreds of data centres around the world, so someone searching for the same phrase in Greece may see an entirely different result, but NZ results should be easy enough to do.
First of all, get the basics right. The keyword phrase you are targetting needs to be in the title of the page. That phrase should ideally also be in the opening paragraph, and then perhaps once in the last para. The days of keyword stuffing are long gone.
You should also include some related-keywords, such as thermal draperies, curtain making and ready made drapes to the content of the page you are writing. A good source of related keywords is the Google AdWords Keyword tool.
But by far the best way to cement a top ranking in Google is to have other, trustworthy Websites point a link to yours – not the ones that sell those enhancement medications. It’s even better if those Websites are related in some way, and use the keywords you are targetting in the anchor text of the link they send you.
Also doesn’t hurt to have an image or two included, and to have it properly SEO’d. For example, I have put an image on this post that shows a nice picture of sunlight on drapes.
Update: Thanks to SEO NZ for pointing out my slight typo re Adwords/AdSense above. And they probably have a better picture of drapes too
